The CanStrive Corrective Protocol is a structured, three-phase clinical skin program designed specifically for medium, deep, and very deep skin tones. It was built by Shivali Aheer, our co-founding medical aesthetician and skin of colour specialist, to address a clinical gap: most medspas and skin clinics do not have protocols that account for the specific biological behaviour of melanin-rich skin.
This is not a one-off facial. It is a 3 to 4 month program with defined clinical objectives at each phase, evidence-based tools, and a homecare protocol that supports your in-clinic treatments between sessions.
Who this program is for
The Corrective Protocol is designed for clients with medium, deep, or very deep skin tones who are dealing with one or more of the following conditions:
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
- Melasma
- Active acne and inflammatory skin conditionsAcne scarring and textural concerns
- Post-inflammatory erythema (PIE)
If you have seen other clinics and felt that the treatment plan was generic, or that the practitioner did not understand how your skin responds differently, you are in the right place.
Why deeper skin tones require a different approach
Melanin-rich skin is more reactive to certain lasers, peels, and aggressive exfoliation. Procedures that produce predictable results in lighter skin tones carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, rebound, or barrier disruption when applied without modification to deeper skin tones.
The Corrective Protocol is built around this biological reality. Every phase, every tool selection, and every homecare ingredient is chosen with melanin-safe parameters as a non-negotiable clinical standard.
The Three Phases
Phase 1: Inflammation control and barrier stabilization
Before any corrective procedure begins, the skin’s inflammatory drivers must be addressed and the epidermal barrier must be stable. Treating inflamed or compromised skin with aggressive corrective tools produces unpredictable results and increases the risk of PIH rebound. Phase 1 establishes the biological foundation for safe, controlled correction.
Focus areas: reducing inflammatory signaling, repairing the epidermal barrier, lowering melanocyte activation in pigment conditions, normalizing the follicular environment in acne.
Phase 2: Controlled correction
Once skin stability is confirmed, Phase 2 targets the underlying pathological pathways. The approach varies by condition. For acne, this means normalizing follicular keratinization, controlling bacterial load, and regulating sebum. For pigment conditions, it means inhibiting tyrosinase activity, dispersing melanin, and reducing melanocyte signaling.
Tools used in this phase may include: Aerolase Neo Elite laser, SkinPen microneedling, clinical peels, targeted brightening agents, and retinoids. Tool selection is determined by your skin’s condition, tone, and response.
Phase 3: Maintenance to hold results
Pigment disorders and acne have high recurrence rates without structured maintenance. Phase 3 establishes the ongoing protocol to suppress inflammatory triggers, maintain barrier integrity, control melanocyte hyperactivity, and prevent follicular blockage. This phase includes a homecare regimen and periodic in-clinic maintenance treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who leads the Corrective Protocol at CanStrive?
Shivali Aheer, our co-founding medical aesthetician and skin of colour specialist, conducts every comprehensive skin assessment and leads all corrective skin programs at CanStrive.
Q: How long does the program take?
The initial corrective phase spans 3 to 4 months. This is followed by a maintenance phase, the duration of which depends on your skin’s condition and response.
Q: Is the Corrective Protocol safe for very dark skin tones?
Yes. The protocol was designed specifically for medium, deep, and very deep skin tones. Every tool, peel, laser setting, and homecare ingredient is selected with melanin-safe parameters as a non-negotiable clinical standard.
Q: Do I need a consultation before starting?
Yes. A comprehensive skin assessment with Shivali is required before any corrective program begins. This allows her to assess your skin’s current condition, understand your history, and build a program that is appropriate for your specific situation.
